Most rural societies depend to a large extent on natural resources and the natural environment in which they live. The frequent failure of national policies to recognise that and a concentration of development activity upon conventional agricultural and economic activities have often led to serious environmental damage and an irreversible loss of development opportunities. Sustainable livelihoods rely on the inclusion of all economic opportunities within the development framework, including those associated with protected areas. BCC new approach to the development of sustainable livelihoods is to examine the context of development interventions, e.g. incentives, disincentives, constraints and opportunities, etc, and consider the risk of such interventions in order to optimise the opportunities of successful development and prevent false expectations.
