The generic concept of Sustainable Development was highlighted in "Our Common Future" (widely known as The Brundtland Report) published in 1987. Sustainability was defined as:

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs (WCED, 1987:43).

This implies that Sustainable Development leaves future generations with sufficient resources for quality of life. Planning over long time and the involvement of all people in development are essential.
